In Memoriam: Steve Wilder, 70
Stephen Wilder, Sr., who retired as a senior vice president for Chase’s Treasury Department, died May 4, 2017 in Delray Beach, Fla. He was 70.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, he graduated from St. Bonaventure University in 1968. After graduation, Wilder served in the U.S. Army in Germany and Vietnam, attaining the rank of captain. A decade later, he switched his commission to the U.S. Naval Reserve and retired as a commander after more than 25 years of service.
Before joining Chase, he worked in finance for the Bethlehem Steel Corporation and Bankers Trust Company.
Wilder resided in Maplewood, NJ and South Orange, NJ for 30 years and was active in the local community. He served as a Boy Scout leader for 15 years. He also served as a Blue and Gold Officer for the Naval Academy, recruiting candidates for admission. After relocating to Mantoloking, NJ, Wilder served in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary based in Atlantic City, NJ, and Point Pleasant Beach, NJ. He also dedicated more than 3,000 hours in service to the Morristown National Historical Park, where he led tours for visitors and school children, maintained nature trails and assisted with historical research, among other beloved tasks.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Rebecca (Young); two sons, a daughter and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in mid-June in Florham Park, NJ. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery. Donations in Wilder’s may be made to the National Park Service, Morristown National Historical Park, Attn.
