From Ross Morton: I remember Dan Rockmore.
First he was my friend when he was CEO to Don Boudreau in the Middle East Region Office in Athens, Greece.
He had at least two memorable Finance Meetings that I went to.
One was in Gruyere, Switzerland, just northwest of Geneva. He had half of us play golf in March and the other half were flown over the Alps (Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland) in a small four-seater plane (pilot and two passengers). This was in between meetings, of course! I chose the Alps and there were lots of houses snowed in. On the way back, while waiting for our flight from Geneva to New York, three or four of us drove a short distance to take a ski lift in nearby France to the top of a mountain overlooking Geneva and had lunch. The Athens office burned down, so they moved the Middle East Office to Woolgate House in London, where Dan kept a souvenir – a burnt yellow dial telephone.
Dan held another Middle East Financial Managers meeting that I went to in Minster Lovell, England, north of Oxford. I remember Mike Esposito (who had to attend almost all the International Financial Manager meetings as I did – Mike by his choice of course!), saying to Dan, "Rockmore, this place is a monastery." We gave Mike all the Budweiser beer that we could find. On the way back to London, Dan took three of us to his golf course, but we had to say we were low handicap golfers, because there was a pro-am going on. Dan was a low handicap golfer, I wasn't and lasted only about six holes before I stopped!
Second, he was later my boss.
When Tony Terrecciano took over as Global Bank Executive, and Frank Stankard and Jim Bish left to run the new Chase Investment Bank, Don Boudreau replaced Frank Stankard as head of International. He convinced Art Ryan, Retail Bank Executive, to give him back Dan Rockmore so he could be his International CFO. Dan became my boss as I ran International MIS, along with running Global Bank MIS under Dick Boyle until Art Ryan became President and blew up all three Banks-Global, Retail and Institutional. Boudreau went back to Retail and Dan retired not too long after that.
He'd call me at home from time to time to keep up on what was new with me and my wife.
