In Memoriam: Richard J. Sweeney, 79
Corporate Banker at MHT for More than 16 Years
Richard J. Sweeney, who began a long career in corporate banking at Manufacturers Hanover Trust, died on August 24, 2026 in Manhattan, at the age of 79.
Born in New York City, Sweeney was raised in Convent Station, NJ, and was a long-time resident of the Upper East Side.
After graduating from the University of Notre Dame, Sweeney served with the U.S. Navy in Vietnam. Returning from service, he started at MHT in September 1971, earning his MBA at New York University in 1977. Leaving MHT as a Vice President in April 1988, he went on to executive positions at Bank of Tokyo, PNC, Ormes Capital Markets and Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein.
He was a member of the Metropolitan Museum, Central Park Conservancy, and the New York Athletic Club, where he was active as Commander of the American Legion and several committees.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia, daughter and three granddaughters.
