 # Morris and De Wolf: Part of Belgian alumni Marc Smit and Josse Borremans's Life After Chase has been some historical sleuthing into the affairs of the 18th century Antwerp banker Charles de Wolf to elucidate a very early Moment in Bank History. We previously published an article showing why they believe that Bank de Wolf (an antecedent of the Chase subsidiary Banque de Commerce) laid the foundation for the United States to become a prime credit risk.
Now Smit and Borremans have followed up with more historical digging into the relationship between De Wolf and Gouvernour Morris (image)–one of America's Founding Fathers, author of the Preamble to the Constitution ("We the People..."), U.S. envoy to France, and all-around mover and shaker in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Set aside some time to read this fascinating story. We suggest that you read it on a large screen rather than a smart phone.
NEWS & EVENTS (PAST AND FUTURE)
 # HOW NOW, DOW JONES CONTEST WINNER! Congratulations to Eugene Ret, who will receive a $250 Amazon gift card as the winner of the CAA contest to guess where the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed on December 31, 2021. The Dow closed for the year at 36,338.23. Ret predicted it would be 36,301 on October 19, 2021, the contest deadline, when the Dow was at 35,457.31. Second place winner (with only bragging rights) was Cindy Matula, who predicted a closing Dow of 36,223.19. Our members' estimates ranged from 31,232.56 to 39,772.06, with a mean of 35,778.07.

LIFE AFTER CHASE
 Anne-Marie Barcia built a lifelong career out of what she learned in Chase credit training – how to train bankers! She even found the "Bailey manual" in Egypt!
 Read about the other two (or is it three and counting?) careers of Robert Aberlin, and learn how some Chase connections led from one thing to another in film, the dance world and education. Jim Adamson commented on the story, adding a great anecdote...worth a read!

# Object of the Week: Set of Chase Manhattan Bank Bookends, made of cast iron. One bookend features the Chase National Bank facade at 104 Broadway in 1877 and the other features the The Manhattan Company Facade at 40 Wall Street in 1799.

 Read the list of alumni whose In Memoriams we posted in 2021.
 James "Jimmy" Cayne, credited with both the rise and fall of Bear Stearns as its chairman and CEO, died on December 28, 2021. He was 87.
 Debra LeBlanc, 62, who worked for Chase in Garden City for 30 years, died on December 4, 2021. She was an Operation Senior Analyst.
 Colin Swinborne, 84, died on October 14, 2021, in Palm Beach, FL. Starting at MHT as a lending officer, he retired from Chase in the late 1990s from posts in Corporate Affairs.
 Warren Townsend, 88, died on November 25, 2021, in Beaverton, OR. He served Chase Manhattan in the 1970s in East Africa, South Asia and New York.
 Kenneth S. Rolland, 90, died on November 24, 2021, in Scottsdale, AZ. He was Chief Investment Officer of Chemical when he retired after 40 years with the Bank, in 1992.
 Cesar J. Chekijian, 75, died on November 11, 2021. He was head of corporate real estate for Manufacturers Hanover Trust, Chemical Bank, Chase and, eventually, JPMorgan Chase.
How Best to Use the CAA Membership Directory
 If you have not done so recently, please update the information in your profile, so that the CAA and other members would be better able to contact you. Using the Membership Directory is a privilege
of dues-paying CAA members.
Now get a refresher on how to best use the membership directory to find an individual or
groups of individuals you would like to contact. (Note that only dues-paying members have
access to the directory.).
To get to the directory, log in at www.chasealum.org. On the home page menu, click on Membership and then Member Directory.
When searching by name, or in any of the other search areas, we advise starting by putting in less information in the search field. For example, if you want to find William Smith, type only Smith in the Search by Name box; if you put in “William Smith” and he is calling himself Bill Smith in his profile,
you will not find him.
If you want to find members who live near you,
enter the city, state or country (or any combination) under Location. The Years at Chase search is
very valuable. Type in 1996-2005, for instance, and you will find everyone who worked for the bank (including heritage banks) during those years. You can narrow your search by also typing in a location
or job title.
Once you have entered the search words, click on Search at the bottom of the page. When members’ names appear, click on their names to obtain more detailed information about them.
