Chase Alumni: Ice Wine, Anyone? Alumna Co-Owns Johnson Estate Winery

Dear Reader,
# In less than five months (March 31, 2021), we will mark the 25th anniversary of Chemical Bank's acquisition of Chase Manhattan Bank and the assumption of the name Chase. The Chase Alumni Association often gets feedback that we neglect our members whose careers began at Manufacturers Hanover or Chemical Bank. So we're asking now -- about six months before the milestone anniversary -- for your stories about "the old days" at those two banks. Please send your story ideas or essays to news@chasealum.org. Separately, if you have stories about the merger, please let us know. We need your help to honor the anniversary! We're starting the celebration by posting pictures of various Chemical memorabilia items. We'll add more over time and also represent Manufacturers Hanover. If you have other items you want to share, please send the images to news@chasealum.org.

LIFE AFTER CHASE

When Jennifer Schroeder Johnson joined Chase in pursuit of an international banking career, she never imagined that she'd end up co-owning the oldest estate winery in New York State. Ice wine, anyone?

Ottho Heldring (Chase 1972-1998 and CAA board member) is on another road trip -- no interstate -- from Baltimore to Seattle and back, with some major side trips. He posts photos with text daily on Facebook. You can follow his journey at fb.com/ottho.heldring. This page is public, but he'd be quite happy to accept friend requests. Many Chase alumni followed him on his trips in the United States, the UK and elsewhere since 2015. (The photo–"Bring Your Wrecks to Rex"–was taken in Vincennes, Indiana.)

Read how a daughter's death made Vicente Monge Alcalde seek what he calls "responsible happiness" and create a foundation in Santiago to help children with cancer during their treatment. A PDF of a book about his daughter's journey  is available upon request.

Learn how this Chase icon became Mr. Zip of the U.S. Postal Service!  The article is taken from the must-read JPMorgan Chase page of the Smithsonian's Postal Service website, which tells of the interconnections between the USPS, JPMorgan, Chase and the predecessor banks. It's really worth your time!

UPDATED (Find out how his patient is doing, see a photo of Dr. Kanter's team)
Read the extraordinary and moving story added to our The Coronavirus Spring collection: An account by Chase alumnus Tim Kanter, who became a doctor and is now on the front line of the COVID-19 battle at a Bronx hospital.

Hans van den Houten remembers the Netherlands during World War II, prior to this week's observance of the 75th anniversary of the country's liberation by Canadian forces, providing a link to a stunning article in The New York Times about recovered Dutch wartime diaries and casting today's "war" against COVID-19 in a different perspective.
Hans recently wrote us:
We recently visited the Canadian War Cemetery again in Holten, on the Holternerberg, you may like to look that up with this link: https://www.canadesebegraafplaatsholten.nl/en/home/

In addition, I took some photographs, which may well fit with the earlier article I provided. Just open this link and download:

Please consider sharing with us any special stories you have about displacement, odd or funny stories about how you are occupying your time or old banking stories you've delayed writing up for us because you were too busy doing other things. Please keep sending your book recommendations (and reasons for recommending).

Social distancing is the new norm, but not virtual social distancing! We hope you'll consider the CAA web platform as a way to reach out to others and keep from going stir crazy: Read previously published stories (mostly under "News" or "Life After Chase"), or write a new one for us.
CONTESTS (A winner !)
Contest No. 2: Where will JPMorgan Chase stock (JPM) be at the close of the third quarter?
And the winner is...Deb Talbot!  JPM stock closed at $96.27 on September 30; Talbot guessed a close of $96.45, submitting her entry the day the contest opened on Sunday, May 17. JPM stock had closed at $85.90 on the prior Friday.

When our contest ended on Monday, June 1, the stock price was $98.60. Since then, the price ranged from $92.18 (July 9) to $113.45 (June 8). Predictions ranged from $56.88 to $128, with a median guess of $103.76.

Talbot said her prediction–a mere 18 cents off the actual price–was just pure luck. "I did not use Voodoo on the estimate," she said. Her luck was enough to win her a $250 Amazon gift certificate. First runner up (who gets to use the gift certificate if Talbot can't) is Jim Haynes (guessing $95.15), and second runner-up is Anna Perasso ($98.11).

Congratulations to Talbot!

Contest No. 3: How Now, Dow Jones!
Guess where the Dow will be when the market closes on Thursday, December 31, 2020. Submissions are now closed.

When our contest ended on September 30, 2020, the Dow closed at 27,781.70, up 329.04 points or 1.2%. Our alumni predictions for the year-end Dow ranged from a blood-curdling 16,399.75 to a buoyant 29,977.69, with a median prediction of 27,436.61.
Almost two-thirds of our participants thought the Dow would be down from the third quarter close.

How Best to Use the CAA Membership Directory
If you have not done so recently, please update the information in your profile, so that the CAA and other members would be better able to contact you. Using the Membership Directory is a privilege of dues-paying CAA members.

Now get a refresher on how to best use the membership directory to find an individual or groups of individuals you would like to contact. (Note that only dues-paying members have access to the directory.).

To get to the directory, log in at www.chasealum.org. On the home page menu, click on Membership and then Member Directory.

When searching by name, or in any of the other search areas, we advise starting by putting in less information in the search field. For example, if you want to find William Smith, type only Smith in the Search by Name box; if you put in “William Smith” and he is calling himself Bill Smith in his profile, you will not find him.

If you want to find members who live near you, enter the city, state or country (or any combination) under Location. The Years at Chase search is very valuable. Type in 1996-2005, for instance, and you will find everyone who worked for the bank (including heritage banks) during those years. You can narrow your search by also typing in a location or job title.

Once you have entered the search words, click on Search at the bottom of the page. When members’ names appear, click on their names to obtain more detailed information about them.

If you have any problem with any of this, contact Ken Jablon at jablonkt@aol.com.

As always: If the links do not work for you, you can always access the latest stories by logging on to CAA's web site.

If you have any questions, please send an e-mail to Ken Jablon or call Ken (during normal working hours) at 212-799-9525.

By the by: Don't forget to explore the rest of the CAA Web site. Just click on the home page menu buttons to find the news archive, photo album, membership directory, past In Memoriams and benefit information.
